What possesses Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her right-wing government to go so against CBD (cannabidiol)?
Since taking office in 2022, Meloni has set her sights on the CBD industry, particularly products for oral use. Synthetic and cosmetic products remain off the radar (for now?).
The Italian government previously submitted a decree to classify CBD as a "narcotic," which in itself is absurd. No one gets "sedated" or into a stupor by consuming CBD. And a decree normally comes only in emergency situations.
The first proposal was rejected in 2023 by the TAR, a kind of Italian Council of State. The new decree hardly differs from the old one, except that it now contains opinions from the Superior Institute of Health and the Supreme Health Council. Would they really know better there than at the World Health Organization and the European Court of Justice, which have called for CBD-related products with less than 0.3% THC not to be classified as narcotics, precisely?
The extreme right and cannabis: it will never amount to anything. Like her political minders in other countries, Meloni and her supporters apparently still struggle with the fear of the cannabis leaf. They just can't seem to get rid of that fixation, even though CBD has since been embraced, marketed and consumed worldwide.
